Tracking the Progress of the Mariners Top Prospects

Not a really great year for Mariner prospects in 2009.  Most of the top ten listed below were ravaged by poor production or injuries.  The only good performances were offensive ones in High Desert where one has to wonder how much the park played in their offensive numbers.  So the Mariners are just hoping that this season was an aberration and some of their better rated prospects will bounce back in 2010.

 1. Greg Halman OF - It all started with the World Baseball Classic when Halman was supposed to be one of the big offensive weapons for the Netherlands.  He fizzled, striking out nine times in 11 at bats and the Netherlands struggled with their offense numbers all tournament, though they advanced farther than they ever have on the strength of their pitching.  The season started and Greg’s swing and miss mentality continued.  He struck out 191 times in just over 500 at bats at AA.  On the bright side he did deliver 25 homeruns and 74 RBIs for West Tennesse.  On another down note he only hit .210.  A repeat in AA is almost a certainity and he is going to have to recognize a breaking pitch when it is thrown at him or he will never see the show.  A Dave Kingman he is not.  He did hit .277 at West Tennesse in just over 230 at bats in 2008 so perhaps the WBC swing and miss frustrations carried with him to AA.  2010 will be a fresh year.

2. Michael Saunders OF - Michael had a good year at Tacoma where he hit .310 with 13 homers and 32 RBIs in over 250 at bats.  This resulted in his promotion to the Mariners major league club where he struggled a little bit at .221 with no homeruns.  His slugging percentage went from .544 to .279.  He appears to take some time in a league before he gets comfortable in it.  In 2008 he hit .290 in High A then struggled for a .242 average when promoted to AA.  Currently he is playig in Venezuela where he is ripping the ball for a .333 average, driving in 17 runs in the 22 he has played.  Michael Saunders played for Canada in the Olympics in 2008 and clubbed two homeruns.  He didn’t make the roster of the Canadian team at the 2009 WBC.  His lack of sprinter’s speed will probably make him an average centerfielder, but he doesn’t profile well with the bat as a corner outfielder.
