The next step in the sports card industry

This is a topic that is one the minds of many in the industry, especially hobby shop owners I’m sure. We hear the reports of how the industry is declining, how the industry is no longer for kids . I have to agree. I personally started really getting into sports cards back around 1990 or so, when I was about 10 or 11. I had a blast collecting them; building sets, organizing by team, by position, etc. I used to collect all wide receivers, all White Sox (as I am once again doing) and for kicks I would see how many Braves cards I had – the Braves were kicking butt and taking names back then! I remember trading straight across on the bus, at school and after school at friends’ houses. I remember also only trading by book value.

In my opinion, the price guide (and really, the investor aspect of the hobby) was the first major blow to collecting for kids – and just collect ability in general.В  More people were looking for the next hot star which leads right into rookie cards. I still look for these, but not like I did in the early 90′s. Now, we have “official” rookie logos that companies put on cards. We have blurred lines between what is a true rookie card. From there, the hobby started to get a little crazy – insert sets, holofoils, die cut, memorabilia, autographs in every box. What’s next? How more outrageous can we be? How much more can we cater to those with $100+/month budgets?

This is a very sobering statistic From the first link above:

Revenues have dropped by 75% in the last 20 or so years. No those numbers are not adjusted for inflation, so let’s see what $300 million in today’s dollars was back in 1991 – the height of the sports card industry (based upon revenue). $300 million in 2009 dollars, adjusted for inflation, would be about $466.6 million in 1991. Now, $1.2 billion as reported in 1991, would be equivalent to $1.86 billion in 2009. So the drop is even MORE when adjusted for inflation. Taking that into account, the sports card industry revenues has shrunk by 84%! Looking at the numbers, it wouldn’t be outlandish to claim the industry is on its death bed!
