Labor Day on Cape Cod. Was that a shark?
Provincetown is such a mix. A flamboyantly festive gay town which commemorates with pride the first landfall of the Pilgrim Fathers. It's full of gay studs and go-go nightlife, but cycle ten minutes up into the woods and the dunes, and it's ultra quiet and peaceful, even on a holiday weekend that had us queuing at the bicycle rental shop. It must be lovely when all the tourists leave. We cycled up through the dunes first to Race Point, to sit and watch the crashing surf. The beach life was a very relaxed mix of groups of gay guys parading their impeccable swimwear, and families and kids jumping around in the sand. Richard and I thought we spotted a whale, or something as big, close to shore.. But more on that later. Standing incongruously in the middle of the Dunes was a replica lifeboat station, which had been brought round from the lower Cape by barge years ago. Apparently in the early 1800s there were literally hundreds of ship wrecks off the Cape's Atlantic Coast, and the life savers used to either row out to the wreck, or use a small cannon to shoot lines out to the ship, and bring the lucky survivors out one by one on a pulley attached to a lifebelt. It was strange to think about shipwrecks and struggle on a day spent breezing around our holiday spot. Then home. Richard had booked one of the few rooms left in P'Town by virtue of calling the Chamber of Commerce the day before. The Three Peaks bed and breakfast was just right for us - at the quiet east end of town, away from the nightlife, not hundreds if dollars, and not hostile to small children. Tom hit the sofa bed and we hit our bed about half an hour later. We paid our dues to P'town history by visiting the town museum, and learning more about the Pilgrim Fathers among other things. You are not allowed to leave town without casting from your mind the awful myth that they landed FIRST at Plymouth Rock. And you shouldn't leave town without climbing the granite tower built to mark this proud bit of history....
